Is Your Clinic’s Website Making You Money? A Simple Tip For Getting More New Patients From Your Clinic’s Website Using Patient Testimonials
By: Dr. Ron Daulton, Jr.
I can remember the day clearly – we were looking at a new website for our practice, so the company gets on the phone with us and gives their pitch like usual. Now, mind you, we had already had two other websites for our practice that didn’t bring in a single new patient, so what was different about this one?
Well it looked really nice, had a bunch of fancy stuff like a spinning body, videos of exercises, etc. Why wouldn’t it bring new patients in the door, right? After all, it was a nice looking site, and isn’t that all it takes to impress new patients and get them to choose our office for their chiropractic services? That’s what I thought at the time.
So, we pay our $1,400, get it all set up, and wait to see the swarm of new patients come in from it.
I’ll let you guess what happened next, in fact, it’s probably happened to you too. That’s right – weeks go by and not a single new patient. Maybe it just takes time, right?
Well, it’s hard to keep believing that when months go by without a single new patient from the website.
And all the website company would tell us is the same old thing – tell your current patients about the site, have it on your business cards and promotional materials, etc.
But does that really work? Absolutely not! In fact, that kind of defeats the purpose of the website, which is to get NEW people into your office AFTER they search for a chiropractor in their area on the internet. It’s supposed to be a way for new people to find you online.
If the only people seeing your website are your current patients, then how is that supposed to translate into new patients? And if you come up with 100 reasons why your website should help your current patients refer new patients, then let me ask you this – would they have referred a new patient to you EVEN IF the website didn’t exist? Of course they would have!
And what about adding your website address to your business cards and promotional materials? If I have to PAY for my business cards, promotional materials, etc. then they should directly produce new patients on their own, shouldn’t they? It’s an added step to give a potential new patient your business card, have them go to your website, and then hope that they’ll become a new patient. Why not eliminate the middle man (the website) and get the new patient from the business card or other promotional material to begin with??
And besides that, a website is a part of your marketing plan, and just like anything else, it needs to function on its own so you can actually track if it’s worth the cost or not. If new patients aren’t specifically telling you that they found you through your website, then your website isn’t doing its job.
Well, at the time that we started our new clinic website, I was busy working on another website that I had developed to sell a book that I wrote, and it was really an eye-opening experience because when I first started that website, the same thing happened.
I had a website established, but it wasn’t getting any traffic. I was finally realizing that you can’t just start a website and expect it to be profitable – if nobody new sees your site, then you may as well not have it because it’s not going to make any money for you anyway.
So, that site became an experiment for me. At first I started paying for traffic. I did Google Adwords (which are the advertisements you see in Google when you search for anything – they appear on the right side of the screen and at the top). I tried Media Buying (which is banner advertising on different websites), Pay Per View advertising (which is just pop-up ads), and I even tried Mobile advertising on cell phones for awhile.
And although I started to see visitors coming to my website, it started to get pretty expensive and the ROI (Return On Investment) was very low. So, at the same time, I started to study about different ways to get traffic to a website for free.
That’s when everything changed for me – all of a sudden, I was able to get visitors to my website without having to pay for any of it, so all of the money I made from my website was pure profit!
And I noticed that the type of visitor was very different! With paid advertising, you’re attracting a skeptic because we all know that we’re responding to an advertisement so we immediately become a little leery. With natural traffic (free traffic from search engines), you automatically have a more trusting visitor, and they’re more likely to convert into a sale (or in our case, to become a new patient).
This was 4 years ago when I started learning all of this, and today, my book’s website consistently averages 45,000 NEW visitors every single month, and I don’t have to pay for any of that!
So, I decided to see if I could do the same thing for our practice website and I came up with a really great idea, which I’m going to share with you in this article.
One of the things that were working really well for my book website was that I would create short videos that were related to the topic of my book and upload them all over the internet.
If you’re familiar with YouTube or any of the other video-sharing websites, you’ll notice that when you watch a video, the video has a description box underneath it that tells you a little bit about the video.
Whenever you upload a video to one of these sites, you get to write that description yourself, and what I started doing was adding my website’s address (http://www.healyourbulgingdisc.com) in that description box whenever I would upload a new video. When you do this, that address becomes an active link going to your website, so people can click on it and be directed to your website.
This is how I was able to get people to come to my site using this method. Not only do people who watch the video have the chance to visit my website through that link, but any link to your website actually gives your website more credibility so the search engines will send more traffic your way.
In fact, there are only a few things that make a difference if you’re trying to get free traffic to your website – the age of the site (the older the site, the more traffic it gets), the content on the site (the more content on your site, or pages, the better), and the number of links that are pointing back to your site (the more links the better).
So, for every video I would upload, I would add the link (my website address) in the description, and this is one more link pointing back to my site. Now imagine what would happen if you could find 20 of these video sites and upload the exact same video? Now I have 20 links pointing back to my site, and I just had to create 1 video!
In fact, there is even a software program called TubeMogul that will do this for you for free (it will distribute your video to a number of different sites automatically).
But anyway, back to our clinic’s website, which is what we’re really talking about here.
So, after learning this method, I wanted to find a way to apply this video method to our clinic’s website and see if it would work the same. In fact, the key difference was that I wasn’t selling a book on this website – I needed our website to send us new patients, so what type of video could I upload that would help me do that?
And that’s when it hit me! I’ve always loved patient testimonials because I’ve always found them to be the fastest and best way to convince new people of the power of chiropractic. In addition to that, patient testimonials build the patient’s confidence in you, the doctor, which makes the entire process of working with that patient so much easier.
So, why not record our patient testimonials on a digital video camera, upload them and include a link back to our clinic’s website in the video description?
It worked like a charm! All of a sudden people started calling in, and this happened really quickly – in a matter of just a couple of weeks!
And the great thing about this method is that the only cost you really have is the cost of the camera, but even this isn’t very expensive today. Most smart phones will take video and allow you to upload the files to your computer, or you can even buy an inexpensive Flip video camera (around $150) to do the same thing.
It’s free to upload your videos to sites like YouTube, but remember that there’s usually a limitation on the file size (try to keep all of your patient testimonial videos under 10 minutes).
Just make sure you have your patients sign a form that gives you permission to use their testimonial on the internet (you can get a sample form in the free course I’ll tell you about in a minute).
Think about the power of this! People are more likely to find your video testimonials before finding your website, just because more people watch videos online than any other form of content.
So, when a person finds your YouTube channel and finds even a few awesome video testimonials from your patients, what do you think they’re going to immediately think about you? They’re going to think you’re great!
You’ve already made an amazing first impression, and you haven’t even met the new patient yet! That’s what you want to happen, and this is a great way to do it. You’ve basically pre-sold the new patient, and your job when they come in has just become a lot easier.
Now, why couldn’t you just upload videos of yourself discussing different health-related topics? Well, you could, but we live in the world of social media today.
What does that mean? Well, people tend to believe what other people have to say about you, rather than what you have to say about you. I mean, think about it – are you more likely to see a movie if 5 of your other friends tell you it was really good? Or are you more likely to see it because you think the promo is good?
Most of us will listen to what other people think because we know the promo was created by the company that made the movie, and of course they’re going to show you the best parts! This is exactly why Facebook is so successful – the ability to like something, or comment on something, or share a link with your friends – these are all ways for us to see what our friends think about different things, and that’s what we pay most attention to.
And even if the potential new patient doesn’t know your patients personally, the fact that they’re willing to give you a testimonial to put online says a lot about you.
This tip works like a charm, but you have to do it! Take action and get started today!
